“She has a formidable chest register and is not afraid to exploit it to the full, arms akimbo
like an energetic copper on point-duty. It recalls the extrovert singing of Cossotto and Gorr” ~London Times
First and foremost, an operatic persona in the lost operatic traditions of Simionato, Cossotto and Gorr, Markella Hatziano is one of the most versatile and highly-cultivated artists of our age, and, with her breathtaking, three-octave tessitura, is equally at ease in her standard dramatic mezzo roles (Dalila, Didon, Eboli, Amneris, Marguerite, Charlotte, Judith) as she is in the popular contemporary genres she dabbles in just for FUN. With a desire to incorporate her virtuosity into a pop context she has forged a successful alternate identity in the genre of Opera Trance. She may also be heard in some of the works of Vangelis, composer of Blade Runner and Chariot's of Fire, including the song Glorianna on the Direct album.
Markella's clean style of singing lends itself for the perfection required of studio musicians, and her unusually well-defined coloratura (for a dramatic mezzo) is quite stunning in some of the dance-heavy genres such as Euro trance, creating what one critic labeled as 'one of the few true crossover artists out there today.'
Markella Hatziano's most recent non-classical releases include, ENCHANTRESS, an enchanting world music single with resplendent operatics and a distinct tropical essence; ELLADA, her first Greek song combining the pop voice with some stunning operatics; CELEBRATION, her first collaboration with her daughter Alexandra Larson on electric violin; OPERADICAL, a playfully agressive musical satire of modern pop music and culture combining elements of hip-hop, euro trance, rap interwoven with some incredible high notes; TWO OF US, AGAINST THE WORLD; and, the THE MAGIC OF REALITY: "the music filled her soul with unexpected harmony, the dancing notes on an empty page, an unwritten book a trillion miles away. Her journey begun, to someday understand, the cosmic melody now weaving through the rainbow of her mind..."
